Willson Joseph Wythe, the elder of the two sons of Dr. William Thomas and Laura Belle Wythe, was born in Sacramento November 5, 1871, and died at Oakland March 12, 1926, at the age of 45. Willson attended Oakland High School, graduating in 1890. He attended the University of California, Berkeley and graduated with a Bachelor of Science in civil engineering in 1895. In his training as an architect he had the advantage of residence and periods of study in New York and abroad, where he made a special study of cathedrals, which was the basis of his success in building churches. About fourscore churches in California have been built from his plans, and many residences. For nearly twenty years he was a member of the faculty of UC Berkeley, teaching mechanical drawing and applied mathematics.
