Thomas Leo Hayes
Sept. 12, 1927 - Aug. 23, 2016
Resident of Oakland
Thomas Hayes passed away peacefully on Tuesday following a short illness. Tom was born in Oakland to William and Edith (Carew) Hayes. He married Jackie (McAuley) of Oakland in 1952 and they celebrated 60 joyful years of marriage.
Tom graduated from Oakland High in 1945 and served in the Navy for two years. At the University of California, Berkeley he earned a B.A. in Physics, followed by a PhD in Biophysics in 1955. Tom worked as Staff Senior Scientist and Adjunct Professor of Biophysics at Donner Lab, Lawrence Berkeley Laboratory, where he pioneered biological applications of the scanning electron microscope. He retired in 1991. Tom enjoyed tremendously his research collaborations with colleagues and graduate students throughout his career, including a gratifying sabbatical year at Cambridge, England.
Tom loved spending time with people and pursuing hobbies that captivated and delighted him. He got great pleasure from playing guitar in a bluegrass band with his sons and also enjoyed playing piano. He loved family vacations, including long car trips, camping, and tidepooling on the California coast. With Jackie, he enjoyed traveling and learning local history. He walked regularly with his boyhood friends from Lakeview School. He appreciated wonderful friendships in the Oakland neighborhood where Tom and Jackie lived for over 50 years. He was active for many years at Corpus Christi parish and school. A devoted family man and friend, his appreciative company and insightful nature will be very much missed.
Tom is survived by his children, Michael (Aileen), Peter (Katie), John (Francesca), Amy (John) and Anne (Jim); his seven grandchildren, Thomas, Claire (Scott), Anne, William, Robert (Martha), John, and Paul; and his great-grandsons, Anthony, Thomas, and Finlay. He was preceded in death by his wife, Jackie, their son, Thomas, as well as his brother, William, sister, Editha and twin brother, John.
Family and friends are invited to a Rosary at 7pm, and visitation between 6 and 8pm, on Sunday, August 28, at Albert Brown Mortuary, 3476 Piedmont Avenue, Oakland. A Funeral Mass will be celebrated Monday, August 29, 10am at Corpus Christi Church, 322 St James Dr, Piedmont.
