Hortense "Cassie" Castedo

STUDENT HORTENSE "CASSIE" RODDICK Passed away on Saturday, November 8, 2003 at Bayberry Care Center, in Concord, CA after an extended illness. She was the only daughter of two Spanish immigrants, Jesse Cabo Castedo and Severiana Esteban Melgar, both deceased. Cassie is survived by her daughter Denise R. Lundry of Saint Louis, MO; her son David B. Roddick of San Jose, CA; her granddaughters Erin Lundry, Lauren Lundry, Heather Blass, and Christina Roddick; and her grandson Stephen Lundry; as well as an aunt and numerous cousins in Spain, all of whom love her dearly. Cassie's youngest son James Lee Roddick died in 1992. Cassie moved from her home in Concord to Bayberry Care Center to received care after she was diagnosed with terminal cancer. She had been a 40-year resident of Contra Costa County having moved to Concord from Orinda after her divorce in 1976. Born in Gary, Indiana, she was christened Hortensia Cabo Castedo on January 15, 1929. In July 1944 her parents moved Cassie and her grandmother Felisa Esteban from Gary, Indiana to Oakland, California looking for healthier weather and better job opportunities. Cassie began working after she graduated from Oakland High School in 1946; and continued her career in merchandising at H.C. Capwell Co. after her marriage to Bruce E. Roddick in February 1948. Twenty years later she was manager of the Millenary Department in Capwell's Downtown Oakland store. Cassie suffered a stroke in 1968 while receiving treatment for an aneurysm. The stroke resulted in paralysis of her right arm and leg, a speech impediment, and months of therapy. Despite her continuing disabilities, and learning to live alone after her divorce, Cassie managed her personal life while also helping Diablo Valley College students and others less fortunate with temporary housing. These relationships resulted in numerous lifelong friendships. After her cremation, Interment will be at the CHAPEL OF THE CHIMES, 32992 Mission Blvd., Hayward, CA. Private memorial services are planned for family members. Please Do Not Send Flowers - Donations in Cassie's name may be sent to the American Cancer Society.
