Alfred Goria

Alfred Goria, 1969 Alfred Goria Resident of Oakland Passed away peacefully on February 21, 2010 at the age of 87. He was born on June 19, 1922, in Turin, Italy to Augusto and Esterina Goria. The family immigrated to Oakland in December 1925 where Al resided most of his life. During WWII he was trained to be a translator but ended up as a hospital administrator in India. He graduated from San Francisco State, and got his Masters and Teaching credential from Stanford University in 1947. He married Barbara Deans Organ in 1948 and had three children, Kathe, Robert and Deborah. In 1964 he married Joan Abbott Kane and they successfully blended Shannon and Bill Kane to become one close-knit family. He enriched the lives of many as a teacher of science, math and physical education in the Oakland Public Schools. In 1964 he became the principal of Woodrow Wilson Junior High School, moving to Oakland High School, and later to Administrator in Special Education. He retired in 1982 and enjoyed many years of traveling, volunteering, gardening and enjoying family and friends. He leaves behind his beloved wife of 45 years Joan Goria, children Kathe Goria-Hendrickson and husband John of Clipper Mills CA, Shannon Jewell and husband Lloyd of Flagstaff AZ, Robert Goria and wife Cheryl of Portland OR, Bill Kane and wife Lani of Sacramento, Deborah Goria Wood and husband Kurt of Abington PA, nine adored grandchildren and five delightful great-grandchildren. He lived and enjoyed a full life and will be remembered for his gentle, loving, positive, and giving nature. Alfred GoriaHe deeply influenced the lives of his extensive family, always encouraging them in their successes and supporting them in the tougher moments of life. He also touched the lives of his friends, colleagues and hundreds of students. Greatly loved and respected, Al will be missed dearly by his family and friends. Love is a lasting legacy. A memorial service is planned for Saturday, March 20th at 2:30 pm in the Montclair Presbyterian Church, 5701 Thornhill Dr. in Oakland. In lieu of flowers, memorials in his honor may be made to the Scholarship Fund of the Stanford Women's Club of the East Bay, C/o the Treasurer, Mrs. Linda Landau, 218 Hall Dr., Orinda, CA 94563.
