Laura Combs, 1970LAURA D. COMBS Entered into rest on May 10, 2007 in Oakland CA. She was born on April 4, 1935 in Montgomery County Alabama to the late Johnny and Lue Ella Davis. She was a graduate of Miles College in Birmingham, AL and worked at Alabama A&M University before moving to San Francisco, CA in 1959. She married Curtis Combs in 1961. To this union was born one son Kyle Andre Combs. Laura began her teaching career in the Oakland Unified School District at Lowell Junior High School. She retired from Oakland High School in 1995 after working there for 27 years. After retirement, Laura found her calling as a storyteller through Stagebridge where she became known as Lady Laura the Storyteller. She volunteered and told stories to children throughout the Bay Area. An avid entertainer, she was also known to tell captivating stories to her adult family and friends. She was preceded in death by her husband Curtis, her father and mother, and two brothers Johnny Davis and Aubrey Glenn Davis. She leaves a son Kyle Andre Combs, grandsons Andrew Ray Combs and Kyle Andre Combs II, stepdaughter Wanda Renea Combs, stepson Travis Ray Combs, step grandchildren Dallas Crudupt and Shannon Combs, brother Samuel Bilal of Chicago, IL, sisters Marion Collins of Birmingham, AL and Bonnie Davis of Decatur, GA, and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and dear friends. The family expresses its gratitude to the many loyal friends who assisted Laura during her illness and for your support at this time. Family and friends are invited to a memorial in celebration of Laura's life on Thursday, May 17, at 11:30 AM at Hs Lordships Restaurant in Berkeley, CA. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to either the American Cancer Society or Stagebridge at 2501 Harrison Street, Oakland, CA 94612.
